An interview with Travel Designer

What brought you to melbourne?

4 years ago I was backpacking around Europe, fell in love with a boy (my now- fiancé), and followed him home to Melbourne! For the next year we explored Australia with weekend trips along the Southeastern coastline, The Great Ocean Road, Wilsons Promontory, and of course, the Yarra Valley Wine Region. We were soon itching for another big trip together, and left for a 2 year stint traveling all around South America, the West Coast of the United States, and British Columbia, Canada. We have since returned to the beautiful city of Melbourne, where we plan to stay for at least the next year!

What is the best thing about your city?

The best thing about Melbourne is its versatility. The city itself provides top of the line shopping, art galleries, restaurants, cocktail bars, and nightlife. Then, venture just outside the city limits and you will find beaches, hot springs, national parks, adventure sports, animal sanctuaries (kangaroos and kuala's to feed and pet!) and last but definitely not least, a seemingly endless number of wineries and vineyards! It is truly a city perfect for everyone.

What would you change about where you live?

The only thing I don't love about Melbourne is that they drive on the wrong side (left side) of the road!

What's the vibe of your neighborhood?

Our neighborhood definitely has a family vibe. There are 5 cafe's within a 10 minute walk in any direction. Our apartment sits on a quiet street with a beautiful tunnel of trees lining each side. It's about a 15 minute drive into the city, and 15 minutes to the beach. Absolute perfection!

What things should any visitor to your city absolutely do/see?

The first thing I recommend doing is a trip down the Great Ocean Road. It's a coastal drive running south east of Melbourne, about 5 hours round trip, and is absolutely breathtaking! A perfect day trip for a taste of Australia's infamous coasts. The second thing I recommend is renting bikes and riding along the Yarra river. It is a great way to see both the city and the beautiful parks and gardens that run throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. Lastly, I definitely recommend exploring the Laneways around the city. These laneways are Melbournes historical alleyways, most still with their original cobblestone, bustling now with cafes, shops, underground bars, and some of the cities most famous street art!

What are some favorite hotels in melbourne?

A few of my favorite hotels in Melbourne are the QT Melbourne, the United Places Botanical Gardens, and the Lyall Hotel and Spa.

your favorite restaurants?

This is a tough question! I think my all time favorite restaurant would have to be Miznon. It is a Mediterranean spot with a modern twist. For special occasions, however, we always go to Bar Liberty. The owner and creator has won countless awards for this incredible Wine Bar, including Best Dish of 2019, Bartender of the Year 2019, Best Wine Bar 2020. He is also my fiancés best childhood friend! So we are no doubt his most enthusiastic and proud patrons every time we go in.

what are the key things that people should think about before moving abroad?

Some key things that people should think about before moving abroad:

  1. Pack light. There is a good chance that the climate and local fashion is different from where you live now, so bring the essentials and plan on updating your wardrobe once you arrive!

  2. Keep a folder with all of your important travel document including visa information, extra copies of your passport, passport photos, formal job offer, and even bank statements. Research your options should something change. When you are in another country, it is always better to be safe, than sorry!

  3. Keep an open mind. It is most definitely going to be different than what you expected. So keep expectations to a minimum, and really take your time once your arrive to get to know your new city!
