An interview with 6 Degrees’ Vice President of Training & Operations, Senior Travel Designer, and mind behind Postcards from a Planner (a travel and lifestyle blog focusing on helping professionals and entrepreneurs prioritize travel in their busy lives)

Cari Janssen.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO Chicago?

When I was trying to decide on law schools, I wanted to move to a big city. My now-husband wanted to be close to family in the Midwest. Chicago was the obvious compromise.

What is the best thing about your city?

It’s got everything you could want from a big city (the food, the public transit, the endless options of things to do), but still has that Midwestern hospitality. While I could definitely fit in with New Yorkers, it’s pleasant to see a smile from a stranger every once in a while.

What would you change about where you live?

Taxes. We have some of the highest taxes in the country, and it really discourages young people from wanting to move here.

What's the vibe of your neighborhood?

I live in Lincoln Park, which borders the famous park by the same name. It’s an easy walk to the lake, and steps away from the shopping corridors of Armitage, Halsted, and North Ave. We have the best schools in the city in my neighborhood, so there are always kids running around and people out and about.

What things should any visitor to your city absolutely do/see?

You have to take an Architectural Boat Tour! There are many on offer, but you want the one through the Chicago Architecture Foundation - it’s the best! Skip the observation deck at the John Hancock building and head to the 95th floor bar instead. The main stage at Second City is always a safe bet, but for an authentic comedy club experience, head to Zanies right around the corner.

What Are some of your favorite hotels in the city?

Peninsula Chicago: It’s in a great location right off of Michigan Ave, and they have a Chocolate Buffet on Friday and Saturday nights! | Book Now >>

The Hoxton: It’s cool. It’s hip. It’s right in the middle of restaurant row. You’ll find me sipping cocktails up by the pool bar.

The Gwen Hotel: It’s located on Michigan Avenue and is in the same building as Nordstrom… yes please!

What are your favorite restaurants?

Well, this is a loaded question, since my husband and I own restaurants in Lakeview! So, I’d have to say, Dryhop Brewers, Corridor Brewery & Provisions, Roebuck Pizza, and the soon to open Crushed By Giants!

Aside from the obvious clear favorites, I love Giant in Logan Square, Dove’s Luncheonette in Wicker Park, Pacific Standard Time in River North, Green Street Meats in Fulton Market, and Monteverde in the West Loop.

I used to love the Purple Pig on Michigan Avenue, but they have moved spaces and it just doesn’t do it for me anymore. While the food is still amazing, having to wait in a corporate lobby rather than drinking a glass of wine out on the patio like before just ruins it.
